Moulsecoomb East Campus

University of Brighton Student Accommodation Case Study. The project: Design, manufacture and installation of contract bedrooms and kitchens into a 816 room student accommodation block in Brighton.

Mouselcoomb student accommodation block

Working alongside Uliving, Bouygues Construction and Hassell Architects, Wessex Furniture designed, manufactured and installed contract furniture into this brand new student accommodation facility in Brighton, East Sussex.

On the site of a former car park now stand five accommodation blocks containing 816 bedrooms together with over 100 shared living areas and kitchens which we have furnished with bespoke fitted furniture.

The affordable en-suite rooms are organised in clusters of 8 to 10 bedrooms with a shared kitchen and communal living space.

This contemporary project has rooms that are designed with unconventional floorplans which means standard furniture isn’t suitable.

Our design team were able to come up with designs to fit a range of room types each accommodating some unusual angles and requirements.

The end result is a very efficient use of space and unique, practical living solutions for the student residents.

The Mithras Student Village on the Moulsecoombe campus is part of the University of Brighton’s ‘Big Build’ project and was completed in September 2022.

The colour scheme for the student village is yellow and dark grey. At Wessex Furniture we press our own Melamine boards so we can offer a huge range of colours matched to the rest of your project.

In this instance, we pressed dark grey for the cabinet exteriors and doors and bright yellow for the interiors:

We worked closely with the architect and the University of Brighton to deliver this pleasing two-tone design which can be seen easily in this wardrobe design.

This distinct colour scheme is also seen in the communal ‘cluster’ kitchens catering for up to ten students each.

The sleek handleless doors offer maximum practicality and minimum maintenance.

All is set off with a bright yellow accent coloured splashback Overall the kitchen design aims to maximise the space available for residents with its light, spacious and contemporary design while not forgetting the home-from-home feel.

The shared dining table encourages social dining but can also double up as extra workspace at busy times in the kitchen.

All this was achieved from our UK based 100,000 square foot, purpose-built furniture manufacturing facility in partnership with our experienced in-house design team.
